‘Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.’

Do you ever have times when you just feel defeated? You try this or that to only end up disappointed and disheartened? It happens to everyone.

I’ve been tasting the bitterness of disappointed hopes lately with my recovery. I’ve tried new tasks I think I can handle just to end up once again taking two steps back. These were simple things like climbing stairs, or household chores, things that used to come easily but are now difficult and frustrating, resulting in nausea and fatigue.

That’s the physical struggle, but then there’s the spiritual struggle which accompanies the physical struggle because we are all connected: soul, body, spirit.

In her book ‘Beauty Marks’, Linda Barrick explains the difference between our bodies, souls and spirits like this:

Body: physiological, sense awareness, sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch.

Soul: psychological, self-awareness, mind, will, emotions.

Spirit: Spiritual, God awareness, Conscience, faith, worship, dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

Just like God is Triune meaning three Persons in One, our bodies are so intricately designed that we can’t separate our broken bodies from our emotions and spirits. When the emotions go low so does our energy levels, and the pain seems to flare up or vice versa.

I’m unable to attend church or listen to sermons online because the sound negatively effects my nerves. Last week I tried reading a sermon on my iPhone (the print was super small) and it resulted in eye strain that left me cross-eyed and hypersensitive to light for days. I severely felt the spiritual battle for my soul just then.

I find it easy to feel discouraged but then God is teaching me to find the grace to carry on while healing from this brain injury and that grace comes from Him alone. We CAN ‘stand’ emotionally, physically, and spiritually by the power of Christ who is our Victor in every battle we face.

My copy of the hymn I rescued after a friend’s boy made it into a paper airplane.

The other day, my 12 year old son was listening to the hymn ‘In Christ Alone’ and the power of the lyrics struck me. We can only stand against the wiles of the Evil One undefeated by Christ’s strength alone. We will never face spiritual defeat because Christ has already claimed our victory in the fight by His victory over sin, death and separation from Himself through His triumphant work on the cross.

Only by Christ’s strength alone, will the fight gain a winning outcome but it won’t be easy. Christ has promised to carry us true but the battle is hard.

The lie that we can overcome spiritual battles by our own tactics is dangerous. The minute we think we are spiritual giants and can handle the world and sin on our own is precisely the minute we must get to God for help.

He doesn’t ask us to fight them alone. He knows how much we need Him and He is faithful in helping us when we seek Him for it.

He understands our physical limitations or weaknesses and can give us physical strength entirely sourced from Him. He can also heal our emotions and I believe as my body heals, my emotions will too. They’ve come a long way and God is gluing my shattered pieces back together again with hope.

The other day I was resting with closed eyes in my sofa chair and it hit me. While I don’t know exactly what is occurring with all the physical changes in my body that are scary, painful and hard, my spirit is directly connected to God who does KNOW. My comfort is this: Resting and trusting in the One who knows every detail of my life and believing that He will heal, and carry my body, soul and spirit to the very end. It gives me a lot of hope to stand in His strength alone and trust him.

Psalm 18:35 King James Version (KJV)

35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

Psalm 44:8 King James Version (KJV)

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

Psalm 20:7-8 King James Version (KJV)

7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

1 Corinthians 15:57 King James Version (KJV)

57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 2:14 King James Version (KJV)

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Here are the lyrics to ‘ In Christ Alone’.

Lyrics

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! – who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied –
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine –
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand:
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

  1. I have also been unable to attend church and have difficulty with reading from screens or listening to audio. Instead, I print a sermon from http://www.spurgeongems.org and highlight what I want to return to. Sometimes, I am unable to do even this though, and I simply rest in communion with Him alone, praying without a sermon. This is the sweetest worship of all.

    1. Oh Kim, thank you for the link. It’s so hard to not have weekly fellowship of the Saints but I have grown used to the isolation. It’s a comfort knowing that God in His Sovereign goodness has placed me here and He will faithfully supply my soul with His fellowship. It is so sweet! God bless you today Kim. Hugs๐Ÿค—

  2. Bless you, my husband was very unwell for 4 years of our marriage and went through similar isolation. Very differently we both went through a time of pressing in to God. He like you was unable to attend church or hear sermons and yet found it was one of the most formative times in his faith, having that one on one communion with the Lord. I on the other hand devoured the bible and spent so much time in prayer and worship. God is faithful. No matter how we approach him, he is just glad to be invited to come near to us. Be encouraged.

Two things I loved about this post,
    1) The Hymn, In Christ Alone, one of my absolute favourites during my husband’s illness and I felt His presence just reading the quote at the top of the post. Thank you, I’ll be singing it all week.
    2) Your explanation of our own three-ness! I had never thought of it that way or had it explained that way. What a wonderful revelation. Not that I should be surprised, we are made in His image. But I loved reading it. Thank you for stretching our your shrivelled hand today. By doing so you have built my faith. God bless you.

If you have the energy I’d love to encourage you too. If you don’t have the energy I fully understand, but I include the links below because I believe they will encourage and edify you as you have done for me and others. Be blessed whether you read them or not. God himself is the greatest encourager and edifier and he is with you.

    1) The reason I clicked on your name “God’s whispers of Truth” is because I have been acutely aware of God’s whispers during a recent illness of my own. Illness/injury/recovery is a time when we are perfectly positioned listen to the whispers of God. I wrote about it here, I hope it encourages you. http://godhelpmei.com/2018/06/10/when-god-whispers

    2) One about “God my helper,” http://godhelpmei.com/2018/06/20/lord-be-my-help

    3) One about stretching out our shrivelled hand to God, stretching out when it is impossible. http://godhelpmei.com/2018/06/07/stretch-out-your-hand

    God bless you

    1. Dearest Lauren,
First of all I am humbled by you taking the time to write me in the comments and list the things you enjoy and find edifying regarding my post. It is truly wonderful to have someone take the time in the busy, blogging world to read, ponder and engage in my post. Reading your comment brought tears to my eyes because I do think you get me and understand the place that I have come from and the point I’m trying to make regarding listening to God’s Whispers. Thank you for the three links you sent to me. I have already read the first and love it! I enjoy the way you put it together.๐Ÿ˜€ My decision to my name was based on a online devotional called Daily Whispers of Hope written by a mom of a lady with a terrible TBI from a drunk driver. So, that is where I got the idea God’s Whispers of Truth because He is the only One that CAN reach us but only after we stop, slow down, and listen. I was not a good candidate for that, but He faithfully has shown me how to listen to His whispers through seeking Him in scripture reading and prayer. These two means of Grace are so much more real to me that I honestly can NOW say I’m thankful for the TBI that has drawn me closer to Him. God knew what it would take to get me here. Great is His faithfulness!!

I’m so thankful to meet you here Lauren. My heart is happy!

God bless you too dear one. Hugs.

      1. And love and hugs to you, I get you enough but God will always get you the most! Hold on to that when you feel abandoned, you are not, he mourns and aches with us. He always journeys with us and I love that he brings us each other on the journey, even across the seas. Thank you for writing back, I am so glad you are encouraged, you blessed me so much. Looking forward to journeying with you, as blog friends! I figure God has so much work to do in us he gives us extra help wherever we are at and since we blog it is other bloggers that will be our helpers in this season. We get to grow together. What a blessing. Lots of love God’s whispers of truth. L

      2. And I also look forward to journeying with you as blog friends and also sisters in Christ across the seas. I’m thankful for the technology to be able to come together and fellowship despite the distance. I feel that in finding other believers all over the world, God is giving us small glimpses of what heaven must be like. It’s TRULY amazing and I’m so thankful Lauren, I keep crying for joy. Yes, God does have work to do in our lives and I’m excited to grow as sisters together. ๐Ÿ’—

      3. I’m crying too now. And I realise I don’t even know your name. It’s almost like when you meet someone and just hold their hand and look in their eyes and you know each other because you see God in each other. (Some one else made me think about that on their blog about other languages this week. See, we all need to encourage each other. ) Heaven will be wonderful. Bless you.

      5. Wow Vivian, that is intense. You are a warrior! God bless your journey. It is a long road finding good medial help. I’m glad you’ve found something that moves you forward, keep praying and reaching out to touch Jesus. I always think of the woman who was bleeding for 12 years and had spent all her money on useless medical treatment. She believed, “If I just touch the edge of his cloak, I will be healed.” Keep reaching out, keep believing, He is the same today as He was then. Do your injuries mean you no longer homeschool? Or you persevere with that as well? Actually I’ll probably find out when I read more of your blog. I’ll go and investigate! Lots of love L

      6. Yes, the woman with the issue of blood often comes to mind as a comforting story of hope and perseverance. It’s been a long journey for me but I’ve learned a lot by God’s mercy and grace. I do still homeschool but it’s not easy. Thankfully when I was very bad my oldest helped with teaching my youngest and now we’ve just about caught up in all subjects and even gotten ahead a bit. God’s been so good to us! My oldest two are mostly self taught and need gentle guidance and my youngest two learn well and are eager learners who love to read and play out their books with fun imaginings!! God has kept us. โค
I can’t begin to tell you how much you mean to me.

      7. Your children sound amazing. You may not see it now but God is sowing seed into them through this time. I think of Boaz whose mother was Rahab. I believe the reason he could see the heart of Ruth and love her so beautifully was because he was the son of a woman with a story. Your kids are learning more about life and God through your illness than they could every hope to learn in the greatest classroom ever built. God bless them. God bless you.

  3. This is such a beautiful and inspiring post, Vivian! When you write,” My comfort is this: Resting and trusting in the One who knows every detail of my life and believing that He will heal, and carry my body, soul and spirit to the very end. It gives me a lot of hope to stand in His strength alone and trust him” do you even know how much that encourages all of us to surrender to the Savior? Wow. Just wow. I just don’t even know how you are able to write blog posts right now, but God is obviously blessing your huge heart for Him! Love, huge hugs and prayers for you! โค

    1. I treasure your comments Lynn.โคโคโค I feel so richly blessed by your writings as well. ๐Ÿค— My prayer has been for Christ to be glorified through my infirmities and for others to be drawn to him through my blog. So many with TBI suffer from intense loneliness and bitterness since it can be a very confining trial. So many are ignored or shunned because of their injuries. It’s so hard Lynn. And so very heartbreaking but yet, God’s plan is best, so we trust Him and hang on. Thank you so much for cherished prayers. Some days are better than others and I can only write as my eyes and head allow it. Big hugs dear friend.

  6. Vivian, I just changed my font size on my blog Inside Cup from normal (which appeared small) to large. The font is a lot more readable now. Just in case anyone who does not see my posts in Reader, I want to make sure they are able to read my posts. Thank you for inspiring me!

      1. โค โค I originally kept it at normal because I thought the font was a little too big, but you know, I don't want to prevent anyone from reading. I want them to be encouraged and I want glory to go to God. So changing the font really is no big deal ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope it helps.

      2. It’s a huge deal for me because I realized last night that you get it. From reading my post, you UNDERSTOOD my dilemma, not able to attend church, listen to sermons and the noise, and then my eyes acting out. You understood and decided to help by changing your font……no one’s ever done that. You are truly a GEM. โค

      3. โค I want to reach out to the community. This is why I'll be working on audio versions as well (slowly but steadily) for those who can't see, those who can't read, or maybe someone is really busy but they would like to listen. My mother in law has neuropathy and she is in a lot of pain every single day. She does not get out much. So I've been working on trying to send her images on her facebook more daily that are encouraging. And working on talking to her nearly every day. When you brought up the font, I just knew God was like, "This is something you can do," and so I jumped on that to fix. I'll have to check my second blog and see if the font should be adjusted as well. ๐Ÿ™‚ We need to uplift each other, Vivian!!! I'm so glad this action uplifted you! โค God be with you!

  7. You have a heart for others especially the broken. Your mother-in-law is blessed to have you be so intentional towards helping and ministering to her. Praise God. Neuropathy is tough…….so limiting. My nervous system took a direct hit too and I have lots of cranial nerve damage. The things I took for granted before…..are now sorely missed. God has called you to helping others…..I truly believe this. It’s a beautiful way to show His love…..in reaching out to the forgotten or broken. When I talked to my mama today, I TRIED to tell her how much you have uplifted me but then started crying buckets of good, happy tears. I think she understands. God be with you too!! ๐Ÿค—

  8. Vivian Thank you for sharing truth. I needed that reminder that even though we don’t know He knows and we are directly connected to him. We already know He is the Victor and we can stand in that comfort when our minds do not know because that is one of the greatest things to cause fear is the unknown. Fortunately we do know that he did not give us a spirit of fear but a spirit of power love and a sound mind. God bless
